One of the most important
attitudes in life is confidence. Confidence
allows one to take "good risks" and accept
challenges that move our lives forward and aid us in achieving
our goals. A lack of confidence can hinder one's
success in school, career advancement, and even the ability
to develop and maintain healthy relationships. Ultimately
a lack of confidence
can negatively impact one's level of
personal happiness. Confidence can be thought of as
your degree of belief in yourself to overcome life's
challenges. It is that inner voice that tells you that
"you can" or "you can't."
Confidence has two contributing influences.
The first influence can be
thought of as external. External influence
involves the actions of others towards us. As parents and
teachers, we have the ability to bolster or deflate our
children's confidence through our words and actions. Growing
up in an environment where a child is constantly being told
that they are "dumb" or "ugly" will
likely serve to negatively affect the child's confidence in
this area; independent of their potential. Similarly,
a student that is enrolled in a SHAKU martial arts program
will receive empowering and encouraging messages that
counters negative programming from peers and media and
instills messages for success and belief in oneself.
In an age when media and peer influence is warping our societal
view of "normal" these powerful and positive
messages are critical.
The second influence is internal.
Internal influence of confidence is based on
experiences. Repetitive failure shapes our attitudes
as does repetitive successes. Competitive sports, for
example, are a great way to develop confidence for those
that excel in a competitive arena. For those who do not
excel in such an environment, competition may only serve to develop
feelings of inadequacy. SHAKU's programs build
students' confidence through attainment of a multitude of
"little successes." Our structured progress
and rewards program teach students how to set goals, work
hard and achieve success. This process builds one's confidence
and prepares students to take on other challenges at school,
at work and in life.
In addition, SHAKU students
develop the physical and mental skills to stand up to the
school bully or defend themselves against a physical assault.
These core martial arts benefits allow SHAKU students to
live each day in a state of empowerment rather than
fear. It's one thing to tell your child (or yourself)
to be confident; it's quite another to be given the tools to
be confident.
Ultimately, students
enrolled at SHAKU Family Martial Arts are surrounded by positive
thinking, goal oriented individuals. Instructors teach
with respect and caring motivation. Students are
challenged with an exciting, though rigorous training
program, that teaches the values of hard work and self-discipline
as well as practical physical self-defense skills
and mental attitudes. These elements work together to
build confidence in every student. Students graduate
from our programs ready to take on the challenges of life;
fully equipped with a Black Belt attitude for success.
All our SHAKU™ schools are proud to
